MapQuest map for location help. Last Updated: 9 February 2010 General MeetingsThe next general meeting will be February 22nd at 7 PM, at the Corbin Community Center, 827 W. Cleveland, Spokane. Sandpoint kayaker Jim Payne will recount his solo kayak trip down the Connecticut River, which he made this past September. On the four-week, 373-mile trip, Jim visited the people of New England, from the rural fastness of northern Vermont and New Hampshire to the urban centers of southern Connecticut. He ran through two breeched dams, (once accidentally, once intentionally), sang in the choir of the Episcopal church of Hanover, New Hampshire (with no rehearsal!), and camped in a bull pasture near Hartford, Connecticut. Jim has been making solo touring trips for many years on waterways including the Columbia, the Potomac, the Hudson, the St. Lawrence, the Erie Canal, the Mississippi, and Miami to Key West. He's written about these adventures in "One Inch above the Water; Running away on America's rivers." Details of these trips and pictures can be found at www.OneInchAboveTheWater.com. (Jim will bring copies of his book for sale). Roll Sessions Coming UpSunday evening kayak roll sessions will begin next month at the Valley YMCA. The dates are February 28, March 7, 14, 21 and 28. The session on March 28th is for sea kayaks only, and you must contact Brian Durheim, sea kayak coordinator (509-590-7544 or turboyaker@yahoo.com), ahead of time for that session so it is not overfull. Only whitewater kayaks can be used at the first four roll sessions, so more people can fit in the pool. We are getting three lanes, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Per the contract, "locker room and access to areas other than the pool will be locked off at 7:45 p.m. Changing rooms on the pool deck will be available until 8 p.m." The club is paying a rental fee for use of the pool and as such, must sign a contract to this effect. Due to this, only club members will be allowed to use the pool, but there will be no charge to them. Come in through the side door to the pool. We will have a club representative there to check people in. Participants will have to sign our Event Waiver. If you have a friend who is not a club member who wants to come, he/she will have to pay the $25 membership fee to join. We will have membership forms available there. Racing and Fitness Paddling with the SCKC ~ Tuesday Night RacesBrook Swanson, Racing Coordinator We are working on new initiatives to develop the competitive and fitness aspects of paddling with the club. We will start an informal race series this summer, shooting for five to ten Tuesdays throughout the paddling season (a schedule and locations will be forthcoming). You can bring any type of boat and race against other similar craft (canoes, sea kayaks, recreational kayaks, etc.). This should give us an excuse to get out on the water, get a workout and meet other paddlers interested in this aspect of our sport. More information will be in the next Eddy Line and will be posted on this website when available. You can also contact Brook Swanson (swansonb@gonzaga.edu). Board MeetingMonday, March 1, 6:30 pm ~ Paddle Board meeting. All interested members are welcome! Board meetings are held at Mountain Gear’s corporate office, 6021 E. Mansfield. All interested members are welcome!
