Priest Lake Trip ReportBy Jill KassaThe highlights of our trip are numerous and wonderful. Joining us on this trip were Kelley Lyon and Jeff and Chris Stevens. One of our very first delights was coming upon a "wetsuited" elderly woman swimming-- that's right, swimming, just north of Beaver Creek campground. She reported to us that this is a daily routine for her. WOW! We paddled up through the thoroughfare and camped at Geisanger campground. We were able to get camp set up just before the snow and sleet came. The weather provided us with variety, ranging from sunshine to snow and sleet. We stayed cozy and warm in our numerous layers of clothes, a warm fire and Bob's great canopy over the picnic table. Saturday afternoon found us hiking up to the north end of the lake where we enjoyed viewing the white, fresh snow contrasted against the green moss and beautiful wildflowers. Having seen quite a few moose tracks, we were hoping to see an actual moose. No luck. We did, however, see beautiful creeks and pools of water. Upon arriving at a warm, sunny sandy beach, we took a rest. Some of us took more of a rest than others, but we won't mention any names. Later in the evening, Jeff and Chris took a paddle and were blessed with seeing one of those moose we were hoping to see earlier, just up from camp. The rest of the evening was spent around the campfire, enjoying the quiet solitude. Sunday morning brought us partly cloudy skies and beautiful views of snow-capped mountains. Kelley had to leave us early to return home to study-- a very dedicated student! After packing up, we, along with Jeff and Chris, enjoyed a paddle up the lake. We hit some gusty wind coming back but handled it well. Entering the thoroughfare, we noticed very dark, enveloping skies to the north. Jeff predicted that the rain would stay away until we were within 200' of our take-out. Guess what? He hit it! Not only did we get rain, but also sleet. It was a great trip with even greater company. |
